Indigenous Martial Performance as an Imagetic Political Strategy
Xondaro Guarani: Martial Art, Performance, and Politics
This master's research represents a significant milestone in my academic and professional trajectory, emerging from a crucial decision made at the age of 35 in 2013. After nearly a decade working in video editing for advertising, particularly for digital media, I recognized the growing relevance of audiovisual content on the internet and its political and social impact, especially in the context of post-2013 Brazil. This scenario motivated me to seek a deeper understanding of social dynamics and the political power of audiovisual content on social networks, leading me to enroll in the Social Sciences program at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).
During my undergraduate studies, I participated in various research projects, receiving a scholarship from the Indigenous Peoples Studies Program (PROÍNDIO/UERJ) and interning at the Images, Narratives, and Cultural Practices Research Group (INARRA). These experiences allowed me to deepen my studies in visual anthropology and ethnic issues, consolidating my understanding of power dynamics and the political relevance of audiovisual media.
The research analyzed the xondaro, a bodily practice of the Guarani indigenous people. It involved visits to the Pyau (SP) and Sapukai (RJ) indigenous villages and aimed to conceptualize this Guarani practice as a Martial Performance. Characterized by having two performances interconnected by this Other adversary, the Martial Performance is fundamentally motivated by agonism.
Thus, the research addressed aspects that relate the xondaro to political and cultural issues, exploring the connection between the practitioner's body and the Other, understood as the adversary, and the agency of the image of this body in a state of performance, as an imagetic political strategy.

Xondaro Guarani:
Martial Art, Performance, and Politics
The research culminated in the book "Xondaro Guarani: Martial Art, Performance, and Politics."
Beyond being a materialization of the research, the book is a record of the effort undertaken during the completion of the Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences and the Master's dissertation.
The book is organized into two parts. The first part corresponds to the undergraduate thesis, which includes the initial period and the first contacts I made with a xondaro master, ruvixa.
The second part corresponds to the continuation of the previous contact and a deeper analysis of martial performance.
The result aims to offer a contribution to the field of studies not only on indigenous communities but also on martial arts from a theoretical-anthropological perspective.
